Santo Antão / Embargo: There are possibilities of “specific measures” to allow the export of agricultural products – City Hall

Porto Novo, June 10 (Inforpress) – The Government and municipalities of Santo Antão continue to discuss the embargo imposed 35 years ago on the agricultural products of this island, and at this time it is possible to take “very specific measures” that allow export.

The mayor of Porto Novo, Aníbal Fonseca, says that this issue is being analyzed with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAA), believing that there is a possibility that products from the valleys without the millipedes are exported, without restrictions, to the other islands.

This is the case of Tarrafal de Monte Trigo, the country’s largest producer of yams, with a production of around 700 tons/year, whose producers have been complaining about the lack of market, since, even free of pests, product can not be exported to markets like Santiago, where a kilogram of this product reaches 900 escudos.

One kilogram of the Tarrafal de Monte Trigo yam costs in Santo Antão and São Vicente markets between 100 and 150 escudos, reasons why producers have been insisting on the need for the Government to lift the embargo for this product, highly valued in Santiago.
