Ribeira Grande: Dutch foundation trains first responders to help in remote areas

Ribeira Grande, 28 Dec (Inforpress) – The Dutch Nova Onda Foundation will launch, next February, first aid training for residents in areas with little access to healthcare, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, so they can provide assistance, locally, in if necessary

The idea of training people in the municipality of Ribeira Grande arose in November 2022, when two nursing students from Amsterdam, Netherlands, came to Cape Verde to participate in a project at the Hospital Regional João Morais, in Ribeira Grande, Santo Antão.

Speaking to Inforpress, Iris Hamels said that over a ten-week period, they conducted research which showed that there is limited access to healthcare facilities, resources and knowledge within communities.

“Geographical challenges, such as differences in altitude and unsuitable roads, make it difficult to reach by car during emergencies. In addition, the island is only connected twice a day by boat for specialised care in São Vicente, as planes or helicopters cannot land in Santo Antão,” she explained.
