Porto Novo: Portuguese association helps farmers in North Plateau to deal with “severe drought”

Porto Novo, Apr 8 (Inforpress) – The North Plateau in Porto Novo (Santo Antão) has received in recent days a series of actions demonstrating sustainable agricultural practices with farmers and cattle farmers, promoted by the Association for the Defense of Heritage of Mértola (Portugal).

According to the association, the initiative, which is part of the “No crê água para o desenvolvimento sustentável do Planalto Norte” project (we want water for the sustainable development in North Plateau), was designed to help these farmers deal with “the severe drought” that has hit the area, teaching them to adopt “measures to adapt to climate change”.

North Plateau in Porto Novo, considered “the face of drought” in Cabo Verde, is one of the localities covered by the program to mitigate the effects of the bad agricultural year, triggered by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment from February.

Porto Novo was benefited, under the drought mitigation plan, which will run by September, with the amount of 38 million escudos, said a source from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
