Porto Novo: Farmers without water for three months request execution of a new borehole in Chã de Norte

Porto Novo, Jul 12 (Inforpress) – Farmers from Chã de Norte, in the municipality of Porto Novo, Santo Antão, who have been facing water shortages for three months, have asked for a new borehole in that locality.

The Chã de Norte borehole, which opened in 2015, has been hit by constant damage, with “huge losses” for the 53 local farmers, who called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAA) to execute another one in the location, where, they warn, agricultural activity is at risk.

In the recent years, this hole, capable of producing 26 cubic meters of water per hour, has always been inoperative causing “distress” on the farmers, who have lost all their farm production.

As in other valleys, such as Ribeira da Cruz, farmers suggest a new borehole in this zone, so that this activity, on which practically the entire community depends, is not dependent on a single system of production, constantly in trouble.
