Mindelo, Jan 16 (Inforpress) – Former Prime Minister Jose Maria Neves said in Sao Vicente that if morna is Intangible Cultural Heritage it was because Cesaria took her to the main stages of the world and there is no money to pay for this promotion.
José Maria Neves, who was at José Augusto Pinto High School, this Wednesday where he had a conversation with students about “Cabo Verde 1990/2020 – Challenges and Perspectives”, answered a question from one student about what should be done to promote Morna even more.
For the former prime minister, Cesaria, through her voice, introduced Cabo Verde to the world and if today the country is better known “owes it, to a large extent, to Cesaria”. According to José Maria Neves, the unanimity that occurred in raising the morna to Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is also thanks to Cesaria who took this music to the main stages of the world.
“Morna’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is a great asset to Cabo Verde and we have to be a little bit smarter to use this strategic resource to do cultural diplomacy, bring Cabo Verde to the world and turn Morna into a source of wealth for the country,” he suggested. To further promote morna, the same source argued that “changing the festivals” in Cabo Verde should be “moved to bring people from around the world to hear the richness of Cabo Verdean music” and to create more spaces to promote the archipelago’s music and be a “vector of cultural diplomacy in the world.”
