Minister of Justice defends responsible coverage of cases of sexual crimes against children without re-victimising those involved

Praia, Nov 23 (Inforpress) – The Minister of Justice argued on Thursday that responsible coverage of cases of sexual crimes against children and adolescents implies not re-victimising those involved, either through excessive exposure or sensationalist exploitation of the trauma experienced.

These statements were made while presiding over the opening of the training session on “Legal Medicine in Cabo Verde, with an emphasis on crimes against children and adolescents: the impact of communication on society”, organised by the Ministry of Justice and aimed at journalists.

On the occasion, Joana Rosa considered that sexual offences against children and adolescents represent a “painful” reality that requires not only a legal response, but also an ethical and social commitment.

In this context, he said, the media plays a vital role and is a “powerful” tool for raising awareness, prevention and support for victims by disseminating accurate and comprehensible information about medico-legal cases.
