Maio: Women from Alcatraz bet on “whelk treatment” to overcome unemployment

Porto Inglês, Dec 17 (Inforpress) – Women from Alcatraz, in the island of Maio, have found in the whelk treatment an alternative to overcome unemployment and increase family incomes.

Speaking to Inforpress, the spokeswoman for the Alcatraz local women’s group / heads of household, Alvina Freire, explained that the choice for this work, which they have adopted as a profession for over 20 years, is due to the fact that many are unemployed and without alternatives to support their families.

She herself, as she told Inforpress, has been doing this work for over 20 years and claims that she has grown accustomed to the  strong sunlight during the  whelk treatment process and this occupation has helped her with household expenses. “As you know, in Maio there are not many alternatives to work, we work when it comes and to overcome unemployment women started coming here to wash  whelk,” said Alvina Freire, explaining that “every day from 1:00 to 3:00pm except in the rainy season when conditions are not right, we are doing our job here. ”

According to her, the women in charge for “whelk treatment” are divided into four groups and, depending on the amount of whelk, after the return of the divers they make the treatment and then the division, leaving each one with its share that will be sold later.
