Living with diabetes doesn’t have to be a problem – Doctor

Praia, Nov 14 (Inforpress) – The National Diabetes Prevention Program coordinator told Inforpress today that living with diabetes does not have to be a problem for the patient as long as they know how to control the disease and eat.

Speaking to Inforpress, as part of World Diabetes Day, November 14, Emilia Monteiro, clarified that the disease is not a “seven-headed animal” since the patient, mainly type 1, knows to follow eat a healthy and balanced diet and keep in mind that he/she should take medication.

In Cabo Verde, diabetes affects 12.5 percent (%) of the population, according to data released in 2017 by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In health centres, despite the existence of a survey indicating that 12% of the population with the prevalence of hyperglycemia, the person diagnosed with the disease is 2%, and 50% is in the municipality of Praia complying with a health treatment plan, indicates the national coordinator of the Diabetes Prevention Program.
