Expert says Cape Verdeans are “concerned” about mental health and that many are seeking treatment

Praia, Nov 24 (Inforpress) – Jacob Vicente, specialist in Social and Organisational Psychology, said today that Cape Verdeans are “concerned” about their mental health and that many have sought treatment, especially for mental disorders and end of relationship

“At the moment, the entire Cape Verdean population is concerned about mental health, and the public service has no capacity to respond to mental health in Cabo Verde,” said the owner of the Psychological Care Centre (CAP).

The same source emphasised that there are “very few psychologists” in health structures, adding that there are “only three active psychiatrists in the country” and that the number of patients is increasing, while the WHO says that indicators point to this situation worsening in the coming years.

Faced with these situations, he recommended that it is necessary to have “lights at the end of the tunnel” to know how to respond to them, especially the increase in alcohol consumption, which is “at the basis of all the deterioration” of mental health, and how to deal with stress post-traumatic stress, depression, almost generalized anxiety, pathological grief and cultural influence and feminicide.
