Cabo Verde’s decision to end banks with restricted licenses has nothing to do with Luanda Leaks – PM

Praia, Feb 4 (Inforpress) – The Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, explained this Monday that the decision to end banks with restricted licenses has nothing to do with Luanda Leaks, a journalistic investigation involving one of the banks operating under these conditions in Cabo Verde.

Currently, there are four banks with restricted authorization in Cabo Verde, namely Montepio Geral, Banco de Fomento Internacional (BFI), Banco Privado Internacional (BPI) and Banco BIC, with the participation of Angolan businesswoman Isabel dos Santos, target of the Luanda Leaks journalistic investigation.

Questioned on the sidelines of the meeting with businessmen from Santiago Island, Ulisses Correia e Silva added that the measure had been taken for more than a year, with these banks operating only with non-residents in the transition process to become banks with generic license.

“This measure comes from 2018. We have given a transitional period for financial institutions to adapt. There are few, they have no impact on the economy or on employment and we decided to change the rules in order to have much more transparency in the financial system and in compliance with international regulatory standards in relation to which we have commitments”, he explained.
