António do Espírito Santo says that in Cabo Verde there is a “block” on the Ombudsman’s activities

Praia, Aug 9 (Inforpress) – António do Espírito Santo Fonseca said today, in an interview with Inforpress, that in Cabo Verde there is a “blocking outline” of the Ombudsman’s activities, via the State Budget for 2019.

According to that official, in the country, the Ombudsman depends, in part, on the law and the responsibility he has as such and, therefore, is doing what he can.

Antonio do Espírito Santo made these remarks as he was urged to comment on the statement by the African Association of Ombudsmen (AOMA) released Wednesday, which expressed concern about “difficult working conditions” that some ombudsmen and similar institutions in Africa have been working on.

In the words of António do Espírito Santo, the world is witnessing the extreme right opening  way in several ways, “stifling the independence of the bodies that can ensure the rule of law and the accountability of administrations”.
